National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP)

NCHIP funds states, territories and tribes to improve the quality, timeliness and accessibility of criminal history records by integrating data across law enforcement, prosecution, courts and corrections. For social work researchers the value is the administrative-data infrastructure it builds: NCHIP-funded record systems are the backbone for research on protective orders, firearm prohibitors, reentry and justice-involved families, and awards routinely fund analytic and evaluation subcontracts.

- A university cannot be the applicant. BJS makes awards competitively to states, territories and federally recognized tribes, through the agency the governor designates to administer the program. A social work researcher participates as a subrecipient or research partner of that designated state agency or tribal government, so the route is a partnership agreement negotiated before the state submits.
