The flagship U.S. government fellowship sending faculty and professionals abroad to teach, conduct research, or carry out professional projects, with more than 380 awards in more than 120 countries each cycle. Social work faculty apply into open social sciences awards or country-specific awards; a dedicated school-of-social-work award listing exists in the catalogue.

- U.S. citizenship is required by the application deadline — permanent residence is NOT sufficient. Applicants who have lived abroad for five or more of the preceding six years are ineligible. Awards are open across career stages: early career (no more than 7 years' experience), mid-career (7-13 years), senior academics (13+ years), and professionals with 7+ years in their field; some individual awards restrict career profile or discipline. Individuals apply directly, though most institutions route applicants through a campus adviser.
