Funds patient-centered comparative effectiveness studies of prevention, screening, treatment and recovery approaches for substance use, misuse and substance use disorders at individual, community or systems level. At least one primary outcome must be a substance-use outcome.

- Applications are submitted by organisations and must meaningfully engage patients and other partners under PCORI's Foundational Expectations for Partnerships in Research. An accepted Letter of Intent and a PCORI invitation are required before a full application may be submitted. Studies developing novel interventions, new apps or decision tools, or focused solely on implementation or methods, are nonresponsive.
