PAN Lab levers

Lever

Gate vendor updates

The organization writes terms into its contract that bind the vendor's model. The vendor must give notice before an update, allow inspection, and offer a way out. A data-processing agreement, or hosting the model in-house, governs what the model may do with client data.

What it is

Most organizations buy their AI systems, and the contract is the one lever they hold over the vendor. Terms with teeth include documented performance claims, notice before any update, the right to roll an update back, independent test access, and an exit plan. Those terms limit how far an unannounced change can move the system's behavior.

What it pushes on in the Lab

In the Lab, this lever holds down the errors the automated system produces when its behavior shifts. It weakens the failure regime. It also closes the pathway by which the model runs on an ungoverned host with no privacy guardrails.

You can also pull this lever at a strong tier, which costs more. At the strong tier, each effect below the Lab's strongest setting pushes harder.

In the modes that offer aiming, you can aim this lever at particular parts and pathways of a network. Otherwise it applies to the whole network.

Its pattern in the Practice Library

The Practice Library describes the pattern behind this lever:Vendor quality gate

The pressures it answers

These pressures list this lever among the levers that answer them:

A lever answers a pressure when it pushes the other way on something the pressure pushes on.

The evidence behind its effects

The Lab cites no claim from the evidence registry for this lever's effects. The Lab's authors set the direction and size of each effect.

Pull this lever in the PAN Lab and watch which way it pushes the network.
