PAN Lab levers

Lever

Train the staff

The organization teaches everyone who touches the AI system what it is, what it is not, and where its output may not go. Then it drills the skill of checking that output against its source. Trust in the tool rests on knowing its limits, and mistakes get caught.

What it is

Training has two parts, and organizations often stop after the first. Orientation tells people what the tool does and which information must stay out of it. Drilling teaches the harder skill of checking the tool's output against its source, and people have to repeat the drills as the tool changes. At its strong tier the Lab adds standing verification drills on protected time.

What it pushes on in the Lab

In the Lab, this lever holds down operator deference drift. It raises the checking and correcting that the people using the system can do. It also weakens the pathway by which people paste client data into an unsanctioned tool.

You can also pull this lever at a strong tier, which costs more. At the strong tier, each effect below the Lab's strongest setting pushes harder.

In the modes that offer aiming, you can aim this lever at particular parts and pathways of a network. Otherwise it applies to the whole network.

Its pattern in the Practice Library

The Practice Library describes the pattern behind this lever:AI literacy & boundary rules

The pressures it answers

These pressures list this lever among the levers that answer them:

A lever answers a pressure when it pushes the other way on something the pressure pushes on.

The evidence behind its effects

The Lab cites no claim from the evidence registry for this lever's effects. The Lab's authors set the direction and size of each effect.

Pull this lever in the PAN Lab and watch which way it pushes the network.
